Getting Started
How do I clear my cache?
Click the Clear Cache Free icon in your Chrome toolbar. Select the data types you want to clear using the chips, choose a time range, then click Clear Now. That's it — no dialogs, no navigation.
The extension icon isn't showing in my toolbar
Click the puzzle piece icon (Extensions) in the Chrome toolbar, find Clear Cache Free, and click the pin icon to pin it to your toolbar. You only need to do this once.
What happens when I click Clear Now?
The extension immediately deletes the selected data types for the selected time range and scope (all sites, active tab only, or domain rules). A status message appears in the popup confirming what was cleared. If you have notifications enabled, an OS notification will also appear.
Can I undo a clear?
No. Clearing browser data is permanent and cannot be undone. Use the Preview button before clearing to review exactly what will be deleted. For sensitive types like Passwords or History, extra care is recommended.
Presets
What are presets?
Presets are saved clearing configurations — a named combination of data types, time range, and scope. Switch between them instantly from the popup dropdown without reconfiguring every time.
What built-in presets are available?
Clear Cache Free ships with four built-in presets:
- Cache Only — clears HTTP cache, Cache Storage, and Service Workers
- Developer — clears cache + cookies + localStorage + IndexedDB for the active tab
- Privacy — clears cache, cookies, history, and form data for the last hour
- Full Clean — clears everything for all time
How do I create a custom preset?
Configure the data types and time range you want in the popup, then click the Manage button → Presets tab → New Preset. Give it a name and save. It will appear in the popup dropdown immediately. Custom presets are free and unlimited.
Can I edit or delete a preset?
Yes. Go to the extension settings (gear icon) → Presets tab. User-created presets have Edit and Delete buttons. Built-in presets cannot be modified or deleted, but you can create custom variants of them.
Automatic Scheduling
How do I set up automatic cache clearing?
Open the extension settings (gear icon) → Schedule tab. Enable the schedule toggle, choose a preset to use, then set either an interval (e.g. every 60 minutes) or a daily time (e.g. 09:00). Save — the schedule will run automatically without needing to open the extension.
What is clear-on-startup?
When enabled, Clear Cache Free will automatically run a clear using your chosen preset every time Chrome starts. Enable it under Settings → Schedule → toggle Clear on browser startup.
Does the schedule run when Chrome is closed?
No. The schedule only fires while Chrome is running. If Chrome is closed when a scheduled time passes, the clear will not run retroactively — it will resume on the next scheduled interval after Chrome restarts.
Is scheduling really free?
Yes. Scheduling, presets, domain rules — everything — is completely free. There is no subscription tier, no trial period, and no paywall. Clear Cache Free is free forever.
Domain Rules
What are domain rules?
Domain rules let you restrict which sites are affected when you clear data. An allowlist means only the listed domains are cleared. A blocklist means all domains are cleared except the listed ones. This lets you protect important logins (e.g. your banking site) while clearing everything else.
How do I add domain rules?
Go to Settings → Domain Rules tab. Select Allowlist or Blocklist mode, then click Add Domain and enter a domain (e.g.
example.com). You can paste full URLs — the extension will extract the hostname automatically. Save when done. What are per-type domain rules?
Under Domain Rules you can override the global rule for specific data types. For example: use blocklist rules for Cookies (to protect logins) but no rules for Cache (to clear everything). Each data type can inherit the global rule, use no rules, or have its own allowlist/blocklist.
How do I clear only the current website's data?
In the popup, change the Scope dropdown to Active Tab Only. Clear Cache Free will restrict the clear to the origin of the tab you are currently viewing. This is different from domain rules — it's a quick, one-off scope switch without changing your saved settings.
Data Types
What data types can Clear Cache Free clear?
- Cache — HTTP network cache (images, scripts, stylesheets)
- Cache Storage — Service worker cache (PWA assets)
- Service Workers — Unregisters service workers for the origin
- Cookies — Session cookies and persistent cookies
- Local Storage — localStorage and sessionStorage data
- Indexed DB — IndexedDB databases
- History — Browsing history entries
- Form Data — Saved autofill entries
- Passwords — Saved passwords (use with caution)
- Downloads — Download history list (files are not deleted)
- File Systems — Local file system data
- WebSQL — Legacy WebSQL databases (Chrome 118 and earlier)
- Plugin Data — Plugin and Flash data
- App Cache — Legacy application cache (removed in Chrome 93+)
Will clearing Passwords delete my saved passwords permanently?
Yes. Clearing Passwords removes saved passwords from Chrome's password manager. This action is irreversible. The Passwords chip is marked with a warning colour in the UI as a reminder. We strongly recommend exporting your passwords from Chrome settings before clearing them.
Does "Downloads" delete my actual downloaded files?
No. Clearing the Downloads data type only removes entries from Chrome's download history list (visible at
chrome://downloads). The actual files on your disk are not touched.Troubleshooting
I cleared the cache but the site still shows old content
Try a hard reload (
Ctrl+Shift+R / Cmd+Shift+R) after clearing. Some sites use long-lived service worker caches — make sure Service Workers and Cache Storage are selected in addition to Cache. The Developer or Full Clean preset covers all three.Nothing appears to have been cleared
Check that at least one data type chip is selected (highlighted in pink). If the status bar shows "Nothing to clear," the selected data types were already empty for the chosen time range. Try selecting a broader time range (e.g. Everything) or additional data types.
Scheduled clears aren't running
Verify the schedule is saved and enabled under Settings → Schedule. Chrome's service workers can be suspended when the browser is idle — if you notice missed clears, try the Clear on startup option as a reliable alternative. Also ensure Chrome is running when the scheduled time occurs.
I don't see notifications after clearing
Check two things: (1) Notifications are enabled in Settings → General → toggle Show notification after clearing. (2) Chrome notifications are allowed in your OS notification settings — on macOS, check System Settings → Notifications → Google Chrome.
